Gaining Confidence as a Student Hairdresser

One of our favourite parts of the job is getting to watch our students gain confidence in their newfound skills – practise makes perfect! We understand that it can be daunting starting a new course and learning new skills, but rest assured we’re here to support you every step of the way.

Our current Level 2 Hairdressing student, Brandy, has been putting her all into her course and has even been working in a salon alongside studying. This is something we highly recommend, as the connections and skills you pick up on the job are fundamental to your success down the line as a Stylist. Brandy kindly talked to us about her journey so far whilst offering advice to any prospective students who are looking to take the leap and follow their dreams.

Which course are you studying?

I’m studying NVQ Level 2 Hairdressing and attending class every Wednesday.

Why did you choose to study at the school?

I chose to complete my NVQ at the school as it enabled me to gain the qualification whilst maintaining life balance. It seemed a good introductory course to start my hairdressing journey, as well as gain confidence with my own skills.

Your greatest piece of advice for anyone thinking of joining the course.

My best advice for anyone thinking of joining the course would be to ensure you have time and commitment for self-directed learning.

Your top tips to get motivated.

My top tips to motivate yourself would be to gain experience alongside the course; shadowing, work experience or as a salon assistant if possible. It’s such a great learning experience, inspiring, motivating and will definitely build your confidence.

What are you most proud of so far?

My proudest moment on the course so far would be confidently completing a cut and colour service. It’s a really nice feeling to not feel anxiety during a service. It’s definitely something you can work through and then feel proud of yourself!

What are you planning on doing when your course finishes?

When the course finishes, I am really lucky to continue my hairdressing journey with Flint Hair in Norwich. I’m so excited for the next steps!

Where do you see yourself in five years’ time?

In five years’ time, I would like to have built a really great foundation of knowledge, learning and experience. I hope to be able to build techniques that allow me to creatively personalise the desired style.
