Changing careers can feel like a huge step, especially when you’re moving into a completely different industry. For Josh, enrolling onto the VTCT Level 2 Barbering Course at Norwich School of Hair & Beauty wasn’t just about learning new skills – it was about creating a career that aligned with his values and future goals.
Today, Josh works at Molly Coddle Studios, offering barbering services while building a business focused on inclusivity, community and creating a welcoming environment for all.
Why Josh Chose Norwich School of Hair & Beauty
When looking for a barbering course in Norwich, convenience was important, but so was finding the right environment.
“I chose to study at the school because the start dates for the course worked well for me and the school is close to my house so was very convenient. I also came in before I booked my course to observe and meet tutors and that solidified my choice to study as everyone was very friendly and knowledgeable.”
At Norwich School of Hair & Beauty, we always encourage prospective students to visit the school before enrolling. Meeting tutors, observing lessons and experiencing the atmosphere can help students feel confident that they are choosing the right barber training provider.
From a Corporate Career to the Barbering Industry
Before enrolling onto his VTCT qualification, Josh worked in a completely different sector.
“I have come from a corporate background, working in a range of roles across administration and events organisation in the charity sector and Higher Education.”
Although he later studied Film and Television at university, barbering had always been in the back of his mind.
“Before going to university I spoke to my mum about being a barber, however it never seemed like something that was possible for me.”
Like many students considering a career change, Josh was nervous about stepping into something unfamiliar.
“I’ve never worked in a practical hands-on job before and I was a bit scared to pivot to something so different from what I’ve always done.”
Thankfully, those concerns quickly disappeared.
“I’ve really enjoyed doing the course and I believe I’ve made the right choice to change careers.”
Why Inclusive Barbering Matters
For Josh, becoming a barber isn’t simply about cutting hair.
His long-term vision is to create a space where clients feel comfortable, respected and welcomed regardless of their background.
“I am keen to build a business that specifically caters to members of the LGBTQ+ community, as I know that some barbershops can be intimidating and unfriendly places for LGBTQ+ people.”
While many people view visiting a barber as a routine appointment, this isn’t always the case for everyone. Josh hopes to challenge stereotypes within the industry by creating a positive experience for clients who may have previously felt uncomfortable in traditional barbering environments.
His goal is simple: provide excellent barbering services while creating a safe and welcoming space for all.
Creating a Neurodivergent-Friendly Environment
Alongside supporting LGBTQ+ clients, Josh also wants to use his own lived experience to support neurodivergent individuals.
“I am also neurodivergent so I want to bring my lived experience into my barbering and offer a neurodivergent friendly space.”
As awareness around accessibility and inclusion continues to grow, Josh hopes to create an environment where clients feel understood and comfortable from the moment they walk through the door.
Developing Skills Through the VTCT Level 2 Barbering Course
Throughout his VTCT Level 2 Barbering Course, Josh developed a wide range of practical and theoretical skills.
From clipper work and scissor cutting to beard shaping, client consultation and health and safety, the course provided the knowledge needed to begin working professionally within the barbering industry.
One of his proudest achievements has been how quickly his confidence and technical skills have grown.
“I’m most proud of how quickly I’ve picked up the skills and how quickly I’ve progressed. It’s also really lovely to see happy customers at the end of a haircut!”
Like many students, Josh started the course feeling unsure of himself.
“I started the course quite nervous and worried that I wouldn’t be any good.”
However, with support from tutors and regular practical experience, his confidence quickly increased.
“The support from my tutors has meant I am much more confident in my abilities.”
Alongside practical training, Josh also gained valuable theoretical knowledge.
“As well as the practical skills, I’ve learnt the theory side too which is really useful to understand how cutting hair works.”
Learning in a Supportive Environment
One of the things Josh valued most during his training was the support available throughout the course.
“Everyone is so friendly and supportive, from the course tutors to the office team, everyone wants you to succeed.”
The experience was very different from previous education settings.
“I’ve not really experienced that from an educational space before. My university tutors didn’t even know my name! So that’s been really lovely.”
At Norwich School of Hair & Beauty, creating a supportive learning environment is something we pride ourselves on. Whether students are enrolling onto a barbering qualification, hairdressing course or Holistic courses, our aim is always to help learners succeed.
Josh’s Advice for Future Barbering Students
When asked what advice he would give to someone considering barber training, Josh’s answer was simple.
“Take advantage of all the training opportunities you can and ask the tutors any questions you think of – no question is a silly question!”
He also recommends practising as much as possible outside of lessons.
“I would also say to practice at home and talk to people you know to see if they would be up for getting a free haircut from you.”
The more opportunities students have to practise, the faster their skills and confidence develop.
What’s Next for Josh?
Today, Josh is working two days a week at Molly Coddle Studios, offering:
- Barber-style haircuts
- Beard trims
- Facial hair shaping
As he continues to build his client base, Josh is focused on growing his experience within the barbering industry while working towards becoming fully booked.
“In 5 years time I’d love to be a successful barber, working 5 days a week and fully booked up.”
He’s also keen to continue learning and expanding his services.
“I’d also like to train in hairdressing to maximise my skills, especially in colouring and perms.”
By continuing his professional development through additional hairdressing training, Josh hopes to offer an even wider range of services in the future.
And perhaps one day, combine both of his passions.
“A far-fetched dream would be working in hair for film and TV but you never know what the future will bring!”
