Big Active Summer 2024
We have been lucky enough to have been able to host 16 days of fun for groups of children ranging from 7-16 on behalf of Big Active Norfolk.
Big Active Norfolk is a dynamic initiative aimed at promoting physical activity and well-being across Norfolk. With a strong emphasis on inclusivity and community engagement, the program seeks to inspire individuals of all ages and abilities to embrace an active lifestyle. By providing accessible opportunities, resources, and support, Big Active Norfolk encourages participants to explore a wide range of activities, from walking and cycling to sports and fitness classes and even in our case, at NSHB, all things beauty, dance and hair. Through its collaborative efforts with local organizations, schools, and health providers, Big Active Norfolk plays a crucial role in enhancing the health and happiness of Norfolk’s residents.
A big part of the last 4 weeks has been making the children aware of healthy eating and how important it is. Healthy eating is crucial because it provides your body with essential nutrients needed for optimal functioning, boosts the immune system, and supports mental and physical well-being. A balanced diet helps maintain a healthy weight. We have been implementing this into the days by playing games and providing healthy meals and snacks throughout the day. One of the favourite games was finding a print out of healthy and not healthy food and sorting them into the right piles together as a team!
Week one of Big Active started with Festival Hair. We held three days of this in total, some days for an older age group of 12-16 and other days for 7-11 year olds. As you can imagine ourselves and our salon were covered in glitter and colour spray by the end of the day but it was all worth it as the finished looks were amazing! Take a look!

On the Wednesday of Week 1 we held an Arts and Crafts day whereby we made paper dream catchers! Rosie, the tutor for the day, spoke to them all about dreams, good and bad, and explained how the dream catchers keep all the bad dreams away. All the children shared their funniest dreams and their worst dreams which caused a lot of laughs between them all. We added feathers, gems and wool to the final dream catchers once they had decorated the plates and then we went around the room looking at everyone’s final projects.
Here are some that the children made that day!

In Week 2, we had Sarah, our head of Hairdressing, lead a prom hair session for two groups of 11-16 year olds. They watched and learned one look in the morning and another in the afternoon. They got creative throughout the day by adding flowers and gems to the look!
At the end of the week we had Gina in to teach all things nails. In the morning they went through nail prep and maintenance and looked into a basic routine of a manicure using professional products. In the afternoon the children tried out French manicures, nail art and gems.

Week 3 was full of fun and laughter with sessions focusing on skincare and makeup and arts and crafts.
We had three sessions of skincare and make-up varying in age groups. In the morning the groups went through how to look after their youthful skin and how to protect it. They used; cleansers, moisturisers and a homemade mask. In the afternoon they delved into our make up boxes to create looks that would be appropriate for school, if they allow it, to try and help the young ones understand how to apply makeup naturally. Although they may have got a little carried away with the red lipstick by the end!

In crafts, we made Dream catchers again. We had a variety of styles and shapes ranging from Stitch characters to Porsche cars. They had lots of fun.

Finally in week four, we had Gina join us for festival makeup. As you can see we have lots of glitter and colourful products to experiment with which they loved. At the end of the week, Ellie joined us to show us some moves and taught the group a full dance routine which they loved and surprisingly still had plenty of energy after dancing all day!

Thank you for reading all about our last 4 weeks and seeing what we’ve got up to. Hopefully we will be able to do something similar soon.
Keep your eyes peeled!
